Since 1967, the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego (JCF) has facilitated grants of over $1.8 billion into the community. Two-thirds of these funds have been granted to organizations in San Diego, with the remaining primarily granted to organizations in the United States and Israel.
JCF's Competitive Application Platform (CAP) customizes and organizes competitive grantmaking programs for our donors and partnering organizations working to make tangible and long-lasting positive impacts in the San Diego region and beyond.

The Jim Farley Jewish Communal Professional Development Grant empowers professionals working in Jewish nonprofits across San Diego County by providing access to high-impact development opportunities—ranging from training and mentorship to continuing education and leadership programs. Rooted in Jim’s deep passion for cultivating local Jewish talent and his unwavering commitment to the community, the fund uplifts those who are building a vibrant, resilient, and forward-thinking Jewish future. It also honors the enduring legacy of Toni and Lee Leichtag z”l, whose belief in investing in people laid the foundation for this important work.
The Jim Farley Jewish Communal Professional Development Fund will be held at the Jewish Community Foundation San Diego and the primary implementing partner will be JPro San Diego. JPro is a professional network for individuals who work for a Jewish communal organization in San Diego. The goal of JPro San Diego is to increase the sense of pride for working in the San Diego Jewish Community and support the growth of the talent in our field.
The grant is designed to support participation in a training, workshop, degree program, or certification offered by a recognized organization. Funds may be used to cover registration fees, travel, and related expenses. Funds will be distributed to your employer organization which must be a 501(c)(3) public charity. Your employer organization will receive and administer any funds granted by the Jim Farley Jewish Communal Professional Development Grant. Funds may only be used for a permissible charitable purpose.
Each year, the fund will distribute at least $12,500 with individual grants up to $2,500. Applications will be reviewed on a quarterly basis by a selection committee including members of the JPro team, Charlene Seidle, and Jim Farley.
Selected professionals will be invited to attend an annual luncheon with Jim Farley, invited guests, and the JPro team to share their experiences and celebrate their professional achievements.

The JL Scholarship Fund provides assistance to individuals who have been incarcerated, or have had an immediate family member incarcerated, and who are seeking training to develop skills that will enhance their employment opportunities, enabling them to better support themselves and their families.
Applicants must plan to attend an accredited nonprofit college, university, or training institution after which they will have learned new skills, acquired new certifications, or attained a higher level of academic achievement directly related to their future employment opportunities.
To be eligible for scholarships, individuals must:
- Reside in San Diego County.
- Aged 18 or older.
- Have been incarcerated themselves or had an immediate family member incarcerated.
- Plan to enroll in trade-based education at an accredited non-profit college, university, or training institution.
- Preferred areas of study include, but are not limited to, electrical engineering, plumbing, automotive mechanics, carpentry, welding, healthcare, and firefighting. Students enrolled in psychology, sociology, and Alcohol and Other Drug Studies (AODS) programs will not be considered.
- Complete the training program within two years.
- Demonstrate a financial need.
- Explain how the training will enhance their employment opportunities.
Scholarships awards are typically between $1,000 and $3,000 per applicant annually. If an award is made, the scholarship will be renewable until the completion of the training or certificate, up to 2 years, contingent upon the recipient confirming financial need or other criteria the Committee sets annually.
Scholarship applications will be reviewed twice a year, and students must begin their training within 12 months of receiving an award.
